Education
The board and management of South Central are strong advocates of physical and academic education. On a routine basis, the company makes contributions to sports programs at every high school in our service area as well as Southern Utah University and Dixie State College. In the past, these funds have been used to purchase equipment, make improvements to physical facilities, and purchase supplies.
The company has also made substantial contributions to purchase books and other materials aimed at increasing the literacy of children and adults in the communities we serve. During the past year the company provided matching funds to purchase materials for children (and adults) with learning disabilities.
Backpacks, pencils and erasers
Many residents in our service area face challenging economic situations. Recognizing those challenges, South Central recently purchased backpacks, pencils, rulers and erasers for EVERY elementary aged child in our service area. Altogether, 19 schools and more than 3,000 students were beneficiaries of the project.
Support for military families
The war on terrorism in Iraq has directly affected many residents in our service area. The 222nd Army National Guard unit, based in southern Utah, was recently called to active duty in Iraq. The company learned one of the greatest challenges facing the families of those military personnel was the inability to communicate with loved ones at home. To deal with that problem, the company provided free Internet service and long distance calling cards to families of active duty military personnel.
4-H and agriculture projects
Our service area is predominantly a rural, agricultural area. Fewer young people are choosing to stay involved in agriculture, which has a negative impact upon our service area. Knowing the vital role that agriculture plays in our society, South Central has made financial contributions to 4-H activities throughout our service area.
Huntsman World Senior Games
For two weeks every October, St. George becomes home to more than 6,000 senior athletes from across the United States and around the world. Men and women from 50-96 years old come together to compete in events golf, basketball, softball, track and field events. South Central is proud to be a Blue Ribbon Sponsor of the games.
Western Legends Roundup
During the 50's and 60's the cowboy Western reigned supreme in theaters and on television, and no location was more popular for filming than Kanab, Utah. Hundreds of movies and television episodes were filmed around its red rock cliffs and desert landscape. Every August Kanab host the Western Legends Roundup where thousands of visitors rub shoulders with actors and actresses who starred in those movies. South Central's in-kind donation of labor and equipment help make this tremendous community effort become a reality.
Other worthwhile projects
The company has given financial support to dozens of other organizations. Activities ranging from youth sporting leagues to community sponsored emergency medical programs have benefited from South Central's contributions.
